The 17th installment of the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composer’s Competition is now open for entries. Part of the BBC Proms Inspire Scheme, the competition aims to engage young people aged 12-18 with classical music via composition and workshop schemes.
In the lead up to the competition, the BBC will host a series of Inspire Labs up and down the UK, bringing together top industry talent with young people looking to showcase their work.
Last year more than 550 young musicians took part in the Labs, resulting in 17 young composers having their pieces broadcast by the BBC. The broadcaster also commissioned nine new works from participants.
Upcoming Inspire Labs are being held in Belfast (9 February), Glasgow (23 February) and Bangor (6 March), with internationally acclaimed composers Fraser Trainer, Judith Weird and Anna Meredith leading the interactive seminars and workshops.
Primarily aimed at young composers, the events are also open to teachers looking to learn new ways of teaching composition. Alongside expert tuition, the workshops offer a chance for young composers to meet industry peers, build new relationships and collaborate across the UK.
More information on the Inspire Labs and the competition itself can be found at bbc.co.uk/proms.
Closing date 21 May.
