Audiovisual and performing arts intersect at Sonic Arts Academy

Sonic Acts Academy has announced its line-up for 2020. Held on alternate years to Sound Arts Festival, the academy aims to encourage debate and critical thinking around audiovisual and performing arts.

Names in the programme include US composer and vocalist Holly Herndon; Dutch artist Philip Vermeulen; and electronica DJ Bookworks. Spread across five venues in Amsterdam, the academy runs from 21-23 February.

On 21 February Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will host an exhibition of sound installations, with works from Vermeulen, Ale Hop (Germany), Anthea Caddy (Australia/Germany), Cõvco (UK), Ex Continent (Spain) and Sadaf (US). The opening night programme continues at former squat OT301 with performances from Bookworms, Elvin Brandhi (UK), Via App (US) and Zohar (the Netherlands).

Concert venue Paradiso is home to further performances on 22 February, with Herndon, Roly Porter (UK) and Kali Malone (US) on the bill. The night concludes at Progress Bar with club acts Rosa Pistola (Mexico), Meuko! Meuko! (Taiwan) and SHYBOI (US).

Meanwhile, culture centre De Brakke Grond hosts the academy’s conference programme on 22 and 23 February. Researcher Helen Pritchard (UK), architect Rania Ghosn (US) and curator Nadim Samman (Germany) are among the speakers. The academy closes with a programme titled Transmissions & Interventions: Voice Body Chance, featuring sound designers and performance artists.
