Soprano Alyson Cambridge will become the first opera singer to perform at the Soul Train Awards, when she appears at the event on 30 November.
Taking place at the Orleans Theatre in Las Vegas, it’s hoped Cambridge will bring the genre to a new audience, as the awards will be broadcast on national TV. The broadcast is estimated to reach more than 4.5m viewers worldwide.
Cambridge will perform highlights from La bohème and a ‘classical-meets-hip-hop’ piece arranged by music director Ray Chew. The awards’ opening show also features performances from hip-hop stars Missy Elliott and Lil’ Kim.
The American soprano has performed at some of the world’s leading venues, including The Metropolitan Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and Washington National Opera.
The Soul Train Awards recognise the best in Black music and entertainment. This year’s nominees include pop star Beyoncé, John Legend and Pharell Williams.
