Orchestral health takes centre stage with new toolkit

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic has partnered with Help Musicians to launch “A Symphony of Good Sense”, a pioneering toolkit designed to enhance the physical health and wellbeing of its musicians. This initiative addresses the high injury rates among musicians, which can significantly impact their careers and overall health. Research indicates that 77 to 89 percent of professional orchestral musicians experience playing-related injuries, highlighting the need for targeted support.

“A Symphony of Good Sense” provides comprehensive guidance for physiotherapists and healthcare professionals to tailor health programmes for musicians. It identifies common injuries across different orchestral sections and offers practical strategies to reduce risks, promote early issue detection and speed recovery. This toolkit is part of a broader effort by Liverpool Philharmonic to support musicians’ health, building on their existing Musicians’ Performance and Wellbeing programme launched in 2015, and it is hoped that it will inspire positive change in orchestras worldwide.
