A new momentum for the international performing arts community
From 9 to 14 November 2026, Montreal will become an international crossroads for contemporary performing arts as the CINARS Biennale returns for its 22nd edition. With more than 375 presenters and 154 performances, the 2026 edition will be the largest biennale, marking a significant milestone in the event’s growth and international reach
Compared with the previous editions, CINARS has recorded an increase across key indicators, including presenters, companies and 25 per cent of the number of OFF programme performances. This momentum points to the biennale’s growing appeal and the continued importance of international platforms that connect artists, presenters and cultural professionals.
The event will open with an inspiring keynote address by Philippe Petit, the legendary French high-wire artist who famously crossed the space between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in 1974. His courage, imagination and precision set the tone for a biennale dedicated to artistic daring and the possibilities that emerge when boundaries are challenged.
A bold programme across disciplines and borders
At the heart of the biennale is a programme that celebrates the diversity and creative energy of contemporary performing arts. Official showcases will feature artists and companies from Canada, South Korea, Italy, Guinea, Taiwan, Spain and Sweden, offering a rich panorama of artistic practices and cultural perspectives.
Music, dance, theatre, circus and object-based performance will intersect throughout the programme, reflecting the fluid boundaries of contemporary creation and the emergence of hybrid forms. Among the highlights is a collaboration between the acclaimed Canadian pianist and composer Alexandra Stréliski and French circus company Cirque Le Roux. Combining music and circus, this hybrid performance, entitled Entre chiens et louves, exemplifies the biennale’s commitment to artistic experimentation and unexpected creative encounters.
Beyond the official programme, the OFF showcases will offer further opportunities to discover emerging voices, distinctive approaches and innovative work, expanding the range of artistic experiences available to audiences and industry professionals.
Connecting artists with international opportunities
The CINARS Biennale is more than a showcase of exceptional work. It is a platform where artistic vision meets the practical realities of presenting, touring and circulating performances across borders. With more than 375 presenters expected, the 2026 edition is a chance to connect with international markets, build professional relationships and bring their work to new audiences.
CINARS strengthens this international dimension through partnerships with professional networks, including the European Festivals Association (EFA) and the Association of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Centres (AAPPAC). These relationships encourage dialogue across regions and help to support the international circulation of contemporary performing arts.
The 2026 edition will also host the launch of CIPAM, the Coalition of International Performing Arts Markets. This initiative aims to strengthen cooperation between these markets and create new opportunities for collective action across the sector.
Rooted in Montreal, connected to the world
CINARS is proud to contribute to a consultation forum established by the City of Montreal, reaffirming its commitment to the city’s cultural vitality and international profile. Through the biennale, CINARS helps turn the world’s attention towards Montreal, bringing together artistic voices and performing arts professionals from across the globe. In doing so, it cements the city’s position as an international crossroads for the performing arts.
At its core, CINARS champions contemporary performing arts: work that challenges conventions, explores new forms and reflects the realities of our time. The biennale gives the artists behind this work a space to be seen and heard, and to connect with presenters and audiences around the world.
The 2026 edition celebrates the courage to imagine differently. Its growth demonstrates the continuing relevance of international artistic encounters and the need for platforms that foster discovery, circulation and exchange.
For six days, Montreal will welcome the international performing arts community to discover new work, forge meaningful connections and explore the horizons of contemporary live performance.
