Hayato Sumino sets Guinness World Record with arena piano recital in Yokohama

Pianist Hayato Sumino has received a Guinness World Records™ certification for the most tickets sold for a solo piano recital (indoors), following his “Klassik Arena” recital at K-Arena Yokohama in Kanagawa, Japan, on 29 November 2025.

A total of 18,564 tickets were sold for the performance, marking the largest solo piano recital of Sumino’s career and an unprecedented scale for an indoor piano recital. The concert was also the first classical music performance held at K-Arena Yokohama, one of Japan’s largest purpose-built music venues.

The programme combined works by Bach, Beethoven, Ravel, Cage, Pärt and Kapustin alongside Sumino’s own compositions and arrangements. Ticket sales were officially verified by Guinness World Records™, establishing the event as a new benchmark for indoor solo piano performances.

Sumino, who first gained international recognition as a semi-finalist at the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition, has since developed a career combining recital, concerto and contemporary repertoire. He performs regularly with leading orchestras in Japan, Europe and North America and was awarded the Leonard Bernstein Award by the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in 2025.
