Queensland Ballet is running an online dance competition that fuses ballet and hip hip. The Ballet Beat Drop Challenge asks dancers to submit videos via TikTok demonstrating their dance skills.
To enter, participants record their own dance to a remix of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker. Queensland Ballet posted their own version as inspiration, choreographed by first company artist Sophie Zoricic.
“I really enjoyed exploring the fusion of ballet and hip-hop, and deep at the heart of the choreography is a wish for all to get involved, whether you dance ballet, hip-hop or just love to move to music,” said Zoricic.
Ten winning entries will see their #balletbeatdrop shown on Channel 9 in Australia. Other prizes up for grabs include AUD5,000 (€3,000) and workshop sessions with the company.
Entries for the grand prizes close 17 August, but to make it on the Channel 9 broadcast you must submit by 20 July. Full details are at balletbeatdrop.com.au.
