France moves closer to national music centre

France has moved one step closer to creating a new national “house of music”, after a report on the subject received backing from minister of culture Françoise Nyssen.

The institution would be responsible for addressing the needs of the music sector across the whole country. However, the report specifically states that it would not be modelled on the National Centre of Cinematography (CNC). Instead, it would expand on the foundations laid by the National Centre for Variety and Jazz (CNV)

Authored by Roch-Olivier Maistre, it suggests that a state-run institution would be the best way to meet the needs of the sector. Such an institution could increase musical diversity, promote French music internationally, offer simplified access to finance and encourage collaboration between groups.

As for resources, the new facility would have an annual budget of €60m, half of which would come from the CNV’s current budget.

In addition to Nyssen’s approval, the report has also been praised by Aurélie Hannedouche, delegate general of the Union of Contemporary Music, and Aurélie Foucher, delegate general of Profedim [the Professional Union of Producers, Festivals, Ensembles and Independent Music Broadcasters].

“When reading the recommendations it seems that we have been heard and this is a very positive sign,” commented Foucher.
