Harbin makes history as first Chinese host of WFIMC General Assembly

This year’s General Assembly of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC) will take place in the northern Chinese city of Harbin from 25 to 29 June 2025 and features a public, two-day International Forum for Marketing and Communications.

This marks the first time a Chinese city has hosted the federation’s annual meeting, underscoring Harbin’s growing prominence on the international music stage.

Founded in 1898 during the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway by Russia, Harbin has long been a crossroads of cultures. Today, it is a bustling metropolis of more than
10 million and is often described as the “most European city in China”, making it a fitting host for this international gathering.

Forum topics will include “Dialogue Across Borders: The Role of Cultural Diplomacy Amid Geopolitical Challenges”, “Classical Music Trends in China and Beyond—An inventory”, as well as sessions on online marketing, career management and music education in Asia. Invited speakers include Michael Haefliger (Lucerne Festival), Till Janczukovicz (IDAGIO founder), Victoria Tafferner (Berlin Phil Media), Christel Hon (Programming Director, Esplanade) Douglas Gautier (AAPPAC Chairman and CEO of Adelaide Festival Centre) and Changyong Liao (President of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music).
