Vasily Petrenko wins BBC Music Magazine Award

Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RSPO) have won two BBC Music Magazine Awards. The Russian conductor led RSPO to the Recording of the Year and the Orchestral Award for its performance of Tchaikovsky’s first, second and fifth symphonies.

Prizes were awarded in seven other categories, with winners chosen by the magazine’s readers.

Conductor Teodor Currentzis and Orchestra MusicAeterna won the Opera Award for its recording of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, while the Vocal Award went to baritone Matthias Goerne, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Synergy Vocals and conductor Josep Pons for its album of Mahler and Luciano Berio works.

Other winners included harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani (Instrument Award), Smetana Trio (Chamber Award),  and cellist Nicolas Altstaedt, Arcangelo ensemble and conductor Jonathan Cohen (Concerto Award).
