US and Israel leave UNESCO

The US and Israel have both officially left UNESCO, the UN’s educational, scientific and cultural arm. Both countries claim the organisation has an anti-Israel agenda.

The original announcement was made in October 2017. However, neither country has been making financial contributions since 2011 due to similar complaints of bias.

It is not the first time that the US has withdrawn from UNESCO. In 1983 Ronald Reagan did so, again citing an anti-Israel bias.

“UNESCO is among the most corrupt and politically biased UN agencies,” said outgoing US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley in a statement on twitter.
