The European Tourism Manifesto (ETM) alliance has issued a statement calling for support and understanding for China during the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak.
The alliance, which represents the European tourism sector, said that the COVID-19 outbreak has further highlighted the importance of China’s relationship with Europe.
It asks that tourism operators make sure, “Chinese visitors are welcome and respected throughout Europe,” and that any travel restrictions are made on “an evidence-based approach,” because travel restrictions that exceed such recommendations, “may cause unnecessary alarm, disruption and adverse economic impact across all sectors.”
It also suggests that once the virus is under control programmes such as an expedited visa scheme could be used to encourage the return of Chinese tourists.
“Public safety is the prime concern of governments, and we recognise the guidelines issued by the World Health Organization,” concludes the statement.”
