Tonya Nelson is Arts Council’s next London Area director

Arts Council England (ACE) has named Tonya Nelson as its next London Area director. Known for her work in the digital arena, Nelson takes up the post in September of this year.

“Having left the US to start my career in the arts in London because of its rich and diverse cultural sector, I am honoured and excited to take up the role of London Area Director,” she said. “ I am committed to supporting London’s artists and cultural organisations through the current crisis, and look forward to seeing a future where they can thrive once again.”

Nelson’s CV includes a stint as director of museums and cultural programmes at University College London and head of governance and planning at London Transport Museum. Presently she is ACE’s director of arts technology and innovation, where she has overseen its CreativeXR and Future Art and Culture showcase programmes.

Commented Arts Council London Area Council chair Ruth Mackenzie: “London is a global leader in arts, museums, culture and all the creative industries. With our partners at the GLA and London Local Authorities, we will be working together to make sure we continue to be world leading as we emerge from the Covid-19 crisis. Tonya’s experience internationally and in promoting digital innovation makes us well placed to respond to these many challenges.”

Nelson replaces Joyce Wilson, who will retire in August.
