The prestigious Queen Sonja Singing Competition has received a significant financial boost of NOK 10 million from the Tom Wilhelmsen Foundation. This generous contribution ensures the competition’s ongoing efforts to nurture and sustainably develop Norwegian and international talent in opera and classical music.
Established in 1988, the Queen Sonja Singing Competition aims to provide a global platform for young music performers, allowing them to showcase their talents and receive international recognition. The recent competition in August 2023 witnessed a record-high number of applicants, with 521 singers from 58 nations vying for a chance to compete; ultimately, 40 singers were selected to take part in the preliminary rounds held in Oslo.
Throughout the competition, the singers participated in a programme focused on artistic development and career advancement. They received guidance from opera managers and industry experts from leading international opera houses, helping them navigate the evolving demands and expectations of the industry.
The Tom Wilhelmsen Foundation, known for its philanthropic endeavours, distributed over NOK 90 million in 2022, with a significant portion allocated to cultural causes. Lars Hallvard Flaeten, Executive Director of the competition, expressed gratitude for the Foundation’s support, emphasising its importance in strengthening the competition’s position in Norwegian and international music life.
