Sylvain Cambreling will lead Hamburg Symphony Orchestra – Laeiszhalle Orchester (HSO) from the 2018-19 season onwards. Frenchman Cambreling is currently principal conductor of Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, music director at Stuttgart Opera and first guest conductor of the Klangforum Wien.
Prior to his current roles, Cambreling spent a successful stint at La Monnaie in Brussels, was music director at Frankfurt Opera when it was twice named Opera House of the Year by Opernwelt (1995 and 1996), and won ECHO Klassik’s Conductor of the Year award in 2009.
“The fact that HSO has attracted Sylvain Cambreling as principal conductor illustrates the excellent progress made by the orchestra under Sir Jeffrey Tate,” said HSO CEO Daniel Kühnel. “We are eagerly anticipating our collaboration with a great artist, who will inspire both the audience and the orchestra and will engage his vast musical knowledge and personal integrity to leading the Hamburg Symphony to new heights.”

Cambreling succeeds Jeffrey Tate, who died last year.
