Opera North (US) has captured and all-star cast for its upcoming production of Evita. Brandon Rubendall – known to superhero nerds everywhere as Spider-Man – will play Che, while actor and producer Jenny Ashman stars as Evita and Mark Womack plays Juan Peron.
Evan Pappas, known for My Favourite Year and Parade, will direct Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s show. It includes the hit song Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, as well as A New Argentina, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, and Rainbow High.
The show was first staged in 1978 in the West End with Hal Prince directing. It went on to be big box office on both sides of the Atlantic. A film version starring Madonna as Evita came out in 1996 and was a commercial, if not critical, success.
The show will feature choreography from Kurt Domoney, set design by Paul Tate dePoo, lighting from John Bartenstein, with the orchestra conducted by Opera North artistic director Louis Burkot.
