Sky Arts is commissioning 50 pieces exploring post-Brexit Britain. The Art 50 project will invest GBP1m (€1.1m) into visual, music, dance, theatre and spoken word works over the next two years.
Artists can apply for grants of up to GBP50,000. Each project will be filmed for a series of TV documentaries screened on Sky Arts. The venue partners for the project are the Barbican, Sage Gateshead and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.
“Sky Arts launched Art 50 to invite artists of all kinds, from all walks of life, from all artistic genres, to create a piece of work which says something important about what it will mean to be British after we leave the European Union,” stated the company on its website.
The first round of 15 commissions has already been announced. These include a dance work about the 50:50 referendum vote split in Birmingham choreographed by Gary Clark, and a new play from company Told by an Idiot that explores the lack of diversity on British stages.
Other successful applicants include playwright Martha Barnett, poet Simon Armitage and composer Alex Groves.
A second commissioning round, aimed at schools, is open until 12 January 2018.
