Famed London concert venue Cadogan Hall is readying itself to present 16 concerts, performed by 11 international orchestras, supported by a stellar cast of conductors and critically-acclaimed soloists, for the 10th Zurich International Orchestra Series series kicking off later this month.
The 950-seat venue, which is located in the heart of the affluent borough of Chelsea, and is the chosen venue for the world-famous BBC Proms Chamber Music Series, is home to resident ensemble the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) [pictured above].
The series opens on 26 September 2016 with Russia’s Mariinsky Orchestra (MO), conducted by Valery Gergiev, and closes on 18 May 2017 with a concert by Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Yuri Simonov and British-born pianist Freddy Kempf.
Gergiev will lead the series in three concerts with MO, across three consecutive days (26-28 September), celebrating the 125th anniversary of Prokofiev’s birth by performing all of the composer’s seven symphonies. MO will be joined by Hungarian violinist Kristóf Baráti for Violin Concerto No.1 in D major and Violin Concerto No.2 in G minor for the first two concerts.
Season highlights include a ZIOS debut on 4 October by Spanish Symphony Orchestra (SSO), with conductor Grzegorz Nowak. SSO’s Spanish programme of works includes Giménez’s La Boda de Luis Alonso and Falla’s El Amor Brujo. Australian-born guitarist Craig Ogden will join the orchestra for a performance of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, and trumpeter Alison Balsom [pictured below] will perform Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto with Zurich Chamber Orchestra in November; In the new year, Edward Gardner conducts Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Truls Mørk in works by Grieg, Elgar and Bartók.
In April 2017 Brussels Philharmonic and chief conductor Stéphane Denève will tackle the works of contemporary French composer Guillaume Connesson, including E Chiaro nella valle il fiume appare and Flammenschrift.
Over the last decade Cadogan Halls’ Zurich International Orchestra series has presented nearly 100 concerts from over 40 orchestras.
