The Royal Opera House (ROH) celebrated World Emoji Day on 17 July with a rather original online competition. The world-famous opera company took to Twitter and posted 20 emoji interpretations of famous ballet and opera plots including Turandot, Carmen and The Nutcracker.
Stated the company on its website: “Opera and ballet have emotion at their core, so what better way to bring these stories to a new audience (as well as entertaining our existing followers) than through a series of light-hearted emoji riddles posted on social media?”
Followers who correctly guessed any of the productions have been entered into a prize draw, with 20 pairs of tickets up for grabs. ROH partnered up with Twitter for the event, with the social media website pushing the posts through its ‘trends’ tab.
“We grab any opportunity to tell narratives and teaming up with Twitter means we do this at unprecedented scale,” said ROH head of marketing communications, audiences and media in an interview with London Evening Standard.
The most popular emoji plot got more than 700 re-tweets and 400 likes. ROH said it had received “hundreds” of responses, and is now sorting through to find the potential winners.
The full list of emojis and answers is available on ROH’s website.
