Rei Hotoda has been named associate conductor of the Utah Symphony, making the American maestra the first woman to hold the position.
Hotoda will work closely with music director Thierry Ficsher in her new role, beginning in September 2015.
She said: ‘I am so honoured to be the next associate conductor of the Utah Symphony. Working with music director Thierry Fischer and the extraordinary musicians of the orchestra is a partnership I know will be deeply meaningful and very exciting. I am really looking forward to getting to know the audiences of the Utah Symphony and look forward to collaborating with such a vibrant community.’
In addition to leading the orchestra in various community programmes, chamber concerts, and regional tours, she will play an active role in the orchestra’s education department, leading family, education and outreach concerts.
Fischer said: ‘We are very fortunate to have Rei Hotoda joining the staff of the Utah Symphony. Rei will bring extensive education and community engagement experience to share with audiences in this great state. With her charismatic personality and musical talent, I am thrilled to welcome Rei as our next associate conductor.’
