Philip Setzer – Six in Sixty

Early bird or night owl?

Definitely night owl!

One routine you swear by?

Warming up well before practising.
I’ve done physical therapy exercises, stretching, and breathing routines for over 50 years, which has helped me play the violin into my seventies.

Can’t travel without…?

My cell phone – can anyone travel without one these days?

Who or what has influenced you most in your career?

My parents were very supportive, and my teachers were all wonderful. The other members of the Emerson Quartet have also had a significant impact. Additionally, my wife, Linda, has always been there for me.

Favourite city to perform in and why?

I love Prague. I can feel the presence of Dvořák and his heartfelt music, as well as Mozart preparing for the premiere of Don Giovanni. It’s also my wife’s favourite city, so we have many lovely memories of visiting Prague.

Guilty pleasure/indulgence?

Italian food, especially pasta dishes. My mother was Italian and a great cook, as well as playing in the Cleveland Orchestra with my father.

Philip Setzer is Artistic Director of Manchester Music Festival in Vermont. Next year’s festival takes place from 10 July to 7 August.
