The UK Government has said the performing arts can begin outdoor events again. The announcement comes almost four months since venues were closed by COVID-19.
“Theatres, operas, dance and music shows can start putting on outdoor performances to socially distanced audiences,” said culture secretary Oliver Dowden. “That means theatregoers can experience a live play for the first time in months…and music lovers can attend Glyndebourne this summer.”
The move comes after the government announced a GBP1.57bn (€1.73bn) COVID-19 recovery package for the arts. Some museums and galleries have also reopened.
“As these places begin to reopen their doors, I’m really urging people to get out there and to play their part,” continued Dowden. “Buy the tickets for outdoor plays and music recitals, get to your local gallery and support your local businesses.”
Other government measures to encourage growth in the sector include a VAT cut on items such as tickets, as well as a voucher programme for food and non-alcoholic drinks.
“I’m urging the British people to make the most of this summer safely,” he added. “We need them to support the places that we all love.”
