OPERA America and Mark Campbell create new librettist prize

OPERA America has launched a new prize for librettists.

The Campbell Opera Librettist Prize (COLP) – created with librettist Mark Campbell – will be awarded annually to an American librettist, “who demonstrates an exceptional talent for writing opera librettos and…[makes] a substantial contribution to the opera literature”.

The award itself is worth USD5,000 (€4,250), with the winner selected by a panel of independent experts. They will also be invited to OPERA America’s annual Opera Conference and New Works Forum.

“The prize recognises the crucial role librettists play in any opera’s success,” remarked Campbell. “While the position of the librettist has gained a higher profile in American opera in the last decade or so, there has been little specific recognition for their work.”

Added Marc A. Scorca, president and CEO of OPERA America: “Mark Campbell’s passionate advocacy for his craft has elevated the art of libretto writing throughout the opera field. Without a doubt, he is inspiring a next generation of writers to dedicate their pens to opera and music theatre.”

The application process will open this autumn, with the inaugural recipient named in spring 2021.
