Nicolas Žekulin has joined National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS) as its new chief executive and artistic director. He takes over from Joan Gibson – who is leaving after five years – in February 2017.
It is not Žekulin’s first major appointment in Scotland: he is currently head of artistic planning at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has previously worked at Scottish National Orchestra and Scottish Opera.
NYOS chairman professor Marjorie Rycroft commented: ‘As NYOS approaches its 40th anniversary we very much look forward to working with Nick in further developing and strengthening NYOS so that we continue to provide Scotland’s young instrumentalists with the very best musical training and performance opportunities on the national and international stage’
Said Žekulin: ‘I look forward to working with the excellent NYOS board and team to continue enhancing the opportunities for young Scottish instrumentalists to flourish, and finding new and exciting ways to celebrate the incredible musical talent we have here in Scotland.’
Gibson’s tenure has been a successful one, with the orchestra undertaking a tour to China in 2015 and performing at BBC Proms in 2016.
