New Creative Hub for theatre makers of African origin

Utopia Theatre is launching a new Creative Hub led by African theatre experts. Run in partnership with Sheffield Theatres, it will run for six months.

The Creative Hub will feature online and in person workshops, as well as one-to-one mentoring sessions with artists. It is available to people aged 16 and over of African origin, free of charge.

Disciplines covered nclude directing, stage management, playwriting, dance, drumming, acting, storytelling, voice, movement, improvisation and devising. In total 30 freelance artists will teach the programme, though names have yet to be announced.

“The Creative Hub ensures black artists continue to have income and remain visible as they continue to develop their craft and enhance the lives of the people in our community,” said Moji Elufowoju, artistic director at Utopia Theatre. “This outlet enables people to engage with art and learn from some of the leading professionals in our industry.”

Robert Hastie, artistic director at Sheffield Theatres, added: “The diversity of our sector has never been more important and we recognise the urgent need to do more. As we move towards theatre’s return, the Creative Hub will make a huge difference to the visibility and inclusion of black artists and creatives.”

The Creative Hub will launch on 29 June, with details of the programme and how to get involved announced in the coming weeks. It will run until December.
