More than 500 young singers and instrumentalists from across South East London will come together to premiere Kerry Andrew’s new piece, inspired by Benjamin Zephaniah’s poem The London Breed.
The performance will take place during the final night of the Music for Youth Schools Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in November.
Musicians aged between eight and 21 from Trinity Laban’s Animate Orchestra, and Junior Trinity, Trinity Laban’s Saturday school, and a 400-strong choir from the London boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham, Royal Greenwich and Southwark, will perform with mentors from Trinity Laban and members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Over the duration of the Music for Youth season, 40,000 musicians participate in regional festivals and 8,000 are selected to perform at the National Festival in Birmingham at the Symphony Hall.
Music for Youth executive Judith Webster said: ‘The performances by massed ensembles which MFY presents at the Schools Prom are a wonderful opportunity for music education hubs to showcase the work they do in their own locality on a national stage. The enormity of the challenge and the subsequent performances create life-changing experiences for everyone involved, and we look forward to the spectacle that will no doubt be offered by the South Riverside Music Partnership.’
