Malta International Arts Festival (MIAF) has released the details of its 2018 programme. The festival runs from 29 June – 5 July and coincides with Valetta’s year as European Capital of Culture.
“This year’s festival is a celebration,” said MIAF artistic director Michelle Castelletti. “It is a celebration of the Mediterranean, a celebration of diversity, a celebration of mankind. It is a bringing together of different art forms, of diverse cultures, and a bringing together of creative minds, allowing for explosive bursts of colour through synergy and hybridity.”
Highlights include choreographer Hofesh Shechter, whose company will perform his latest work Political Mother; photographer Reza Deghati, who shares his collection Exiled Voices that documents the plight of refugees; and a residency from Italian dance company NO GRAVITY.
“MIAF is also about excellence,” continued Castelletti. “And what better way to show this than with one of the greatest orchestras of the world – Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the direction of Daniele Gatti. This is a first for Malta, and hopefully a first that will pave the way for many more.” The orchestra will perform works such as the Overture from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Beethoven’s Symphony No 2.
Other notable moments are a screening of 1925 film Phantom of the Opera with live music from MINIMA; a concert from the Choir of Clare College Cambridge; and a programme from Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Gergely Madaras.
