Opera North is England’s permanent national touring opera company, serving the regions of the North.  A creative powerhouse based in Leeds, Opera North is renowned for innovation and creativity with award-winning fully staged productions and ground-breaking concert performances.

Having completed a transformative £18 million capital project, Opera North now seeks to appoint its next visionary General Director who will have the ambition, leadership, and management ability, as well as profile and networks, to take the company forward and build on its success to date.

Reporting to Opera North’s Board of Trustees, the General Director will provide an inspirational, holistic artistic vision and will drive the planning and delivery of Opera North’s broad-ranging programme. They will be the public face of the company, taking the lead in key external relationships, locally, nationally and internationally, and provide strategic leadership internally, fostering a collaborative culture, encouraging innovation and excellence throughout the organisation. 

The ideal candidates will have substantial experience in a senior leadership role in the arts, cultural sector or creative industries, managing sizable budgets in the context of a large-scale enterprise and generating significant levels of income from diverse sources. They will have a good understanding of opera and opera repertoire, of the UK’s opera ecology and the international scene, and an appreciation of current trends and developments in opera production and presentation.
