London’s DV8 Physical Theatre will premiere a new piece next summer at one of Europe’s biggest contemporary dance festivals.
Taking place next summer in the Austrian capital, ImPulsTanz is a month-long programme of performances and workshops.
A host of internationally renowned choreographers and companies are on the line-up, including a collaboration between UK dancemaker Akram Khan and flamenco star Israel Galván.
Brazilian dance legend Ismael Ivo will run Biblioteca do Corpo, an education project aimed at training young dancers.
Developing the participatory nature of the festival, audiences will be invited to dance at several live concerts and DJ nights held at the festival-lounge hosted by Vienna’s historic Burgtheater.
Young attendees will also have the opportunity to take part in workshops led by some of the contemporary dance world’s leading names, including Austria’s Nina Kripas, a former dancer with the Black Eyed Peas.
Aside from the workshops, the festival’s rising star performers will be judged for one of Europe’s most prestigious choreography awards, the Prix Jardin d’Europe. An international jury will award a €10,000 prize to the most impressive performance from the [8:tension] Young Choreographers’ Series, which was won last year by Sweden’s Amanda Apetrea and Halla Ólfsdóttir for the rock-inspired Beauty and the Beast.
The ImPulsTanz research project also returns to the festival, having run alongside the performance and workshop program for over 23 years. The project sees professionals work with a selection of individuals on challenging briefs which combine choreography with other artistic and non-artistic disciplines. It’s hoped the projects will continue to explore and exemplify the diverse nature of both the festival and contemporary dance forms.
ImPulsTanz runs from 17 July-17 August 2014.
