This month’s diarist Chief Executive of the Hallé Orchestra David Butcher shares his “Six in Sixty”
- Early bird or night owl?
Early bird. - One routine you swear by?
Getting up early with a traditional cup of tea. - Can’t travel without…?
Reading glasses. - Who or what has influenced you most in your career?
Not one person, really, as it’s more the variety of people I’ve worked with, but perhaps most of all the composers: Tippett (yes, I’m that old), Knussen, John Woolrich, Kaija Saariaho, Nico Muhly – artists compelled to create, building bridges from the past to a brave new world. - Favourite city and why?
Manchester. A vibrant, can-do, international city, continually changing and almost unrecognisable from when I first came here as a boy and student; respectively, to hear the Hallé in the Free Trade Hall and The Smiths at the Hacienda. - Guilty pleasure/indulgence?
(Without guilt) an early evening Negroni.
