A new work by French choreographer Yann Lheureux will see dancers from France and South Africa perform on a ‘digital stage’.
Macadam Instinct Digital Stage is a multimedia dance project featuring two simultaneous performances, one in Aix-en-Provence and the other in Johannesburg. The two sets of dancers will be able to interact with their digital counterparts, performing thousands of miles apart.
The production explores the impact of the digital revolution upon the immediacy of human interactions, and will feature seven South African contemporary dancers along with seven dancers from Compagnie Yann Lheureux.
As well as being a collaborative work between South African and French artists, Lheureux also worked with teams in several other countries to create the work, including South Korea, Tunisia, Spain, Reunion, Mauritius, Senegal and Madagascar.
Produced in partnership with the French Institute of South Africa and the Wits Theatre in Johannesburg, the project is part of the France-South Africa Seasons 2012 & 2013, a programme geared towards reinforcing existing cultural collaborations between the two countries, and establishing new ones.
It’s also hoped the programme will diversify the image of France in South Africa, and vice versa.
Macadam Instinct Digital Stage will be performed at Pavillon Noir, Aix-en-Provence and the Wits Theatre, Johannesburg on 7 and 8 November.
