Dame Evelyn Glennie at King’s Cross

Dame Evelyn Glennie has begun her residency at the King’s Cross development in London. The newly created residency will see the percussionist work with the local community to develop music and sounds that represent the area.

King’s Cross is a new housing, business and cultural development in London that has cafes, galleries and performing arts spaces like the Francis Crick Institute and King’s Cross Theatre. Developers King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership are co-funding the Glennie’s residency alongside PRS Foundation.

‘I am hugely honoured and humbled to be chosen as musician in residence by the local King’s Cross community,’ said Glennie, who was selected via a public vote. ‘Listening will be the core of my residency and I plan to get into the heart, beat and pulse of the people and the landscape thus, to embark on this journey collaborating with broad-minded people whose aim is to make a difference is immensely exciting.’

Vanessa Reed, PRS Foundation chief executive, added: ‘This residency will be an exciting and unique experience for Evelyn and her team to explore King’s Cross and create pieces of new music with the diverse range of communities now living, working and studying in this exciting regeneration area.’

Glennie will be King’s Cross Musician in Residence for the next 12 months, during which time she’ll create sounds influenced and inspired by local people, which will be made available through the King’s Cross Sounds website. She will then perform a final piece later in the year.
