China National Peking Opera Company at Sadler’s Wells

China National Peking Opera Company (CNPOC) is organising a series of workshops ahead of its upcoming performance at Sadler’s Wells. The celebrated company is appearing in London from 19-20 October in its production The Emperor and the Concubine.

The programme opens with a panel discussion on cross-border cultural work at the British Library on 11 October. Panellists include Chinese-America actor Lisa Lu; playwright and director Stan Lai (Lai Sheng-chuan); playwright and director Xinyi Chen; and panel chair Ruru Li, professor of Chinese Theatre Studies at University of Leeds.

Two interactive workshops titled Understanding Peking Opera then run from 13-14 October at the same venue. As part of this, members of CNPOC will perform extracts from The Gin Palace and another Peking opera.

Finally, on 20 October, CNPOC members will showcase the mime, acrobatic and comedy skills of Peking Opera with extracts from The Crossroads Inn and The Monkey King and The Leopard.
