Chetham’s appoints new assistant head of strings

Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, UK, has named Owen Cox as new assistant head of strings, beginning in September 2013. Cox will succeed Cathy Perkins who retires this summer.

Cox was a pupil at Chetham’s between 1997 and 1999 before going on to study at Cambridge University, the Royal Northern College of Music and Northern Illinois University with violinist Shmuel Ashkenasi. Cox has held positions with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and as a sub-principal in the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

He later took positions at the junior department of Trinity Laban Conservatoire and as head of strings at Ibstock Place School in London, whilst also teaching pedagogy at the Royal College of Music. Cox is also an Honorary Lecturer in Performance at the University of Nottingham.

Cox said: ‘I am delighted to be returning to Chetham’s School of Music as a member of staff and I am particularly looking forward to working in the school’s fantastic new building with its exceptional facilities.’
