The Bridge Theatre has launched the programme for its first ever season, beginning with a brand new comedy based on the life of Karl Marx. Young Marx, written by Richard Bean and Clive Coleman, opens on 18 October at the 900-seat central London theatre.
Sitting on the banks of the Thames by Tower Bridge, the space has been developed by Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr, who led The National Theatre until 2015. Its mission is to commission and produce new shows.
“There is very little Marx didn’t get up to when he was a young man arriving in London,” said Hytner, who directs the play, in an interview with The Evening Standard.
Other productions in the opening season are Julius Caesar (20 January – 15 April, 2018, also directed by Hytner) and Nightfall (28 April – 3 June, 2018, directed by Laurie Sansom).
Future projects include a new play by Lucinda Cox, Alys, Always; a dark comedy from Trainspotting screenwriter John Hodge; and a play about JS Bach starring Simon Russell Beale.
