BPI relaunch Classic BRITs

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has relaunched the Classic BRIT Awards after a five year absence. Formerly known as the Classical BRIT Awards, the event will take place on 13 June at the Royal Albert Hall.

Singer/presenter Myleene Klass and comedian/singer Alexander Armstrong – who both have shows on partner organisation Classic FM – will host. Klass previously hosted the competition between 2008-2013.

Said BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor: “The Awards are coming back with a new format that will not only honour outstanding classical artists and exceptional new talent, but will pay tribute to classic music from a wide range of genres.”

As part of the relaunch the Classic BRITs are running a Sound Of Classical poll, which allows members of the public suggest their favourite emerging artists aged 30 or under. The winner will be selected by an “expert panel”.

As for entertainment, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bal, Bryn Terfel, Alfie Boe and Britain’s Got Talent winner Tokio Myers have all been booked to appear. Also announced is Dame Vera Lynn as the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
