Benedetti Foundation announces executive director

Michael Garvey has been announced as the executive director of the Benedetti Foundation; a charity set up by violinist Nicola Benedetti that aims to provide a quality education in music for young people across the UK.

Garvey has been the director of BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales since 2013 and will take up his new position in July. During his time as director of BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales, Garvey increased their partnership work and international touring, including trips to South America and China. He appointed the first female conductor for BBC orchestra, Xian Zhang, as principal guest conductor. Garvey previously worked as chief executive of the Academy of Ancient Music from 2010-13 and as a general manager for Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment from 2007-11.

He said, “The future wellbeing, support and nurturing of our young people has never been more important and the provision of high-quality music education has never been in greater jeopardy across the UK. Nicola Benedetti has selflessly recognised that her unique set of skills and experiences can be put to use to address these challenges. I am honoured that she’s chosen me to support her in this critical work.”

Benedetti has worked with over 2,000 students and 500 teachers this past year in her role as an ambassador and leader in music education. The Benedetti Foundation aims to focus on providing enrichment, inspiration and variation to the UK’s education system and communities.

Benedetti commented, “I am delighted that Michael has accepted the role of executive director and is joining us to help establish the Benedetti Foundation, and to steer the organisation through its inaugural years. Michael brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of both education and music sectors, as well as a shared belief and sense of urgency relating to the power of high-quality music education.”
