Ausdance National has cancelled its annual awards due to a lack of funding. This year would have marked the 22nd edition of the Australian Dance Awards, which were due to take place in September.
Before May 2016 Ausdance received AUD261,066 annually from the Australia Council (AC). However, when AC had its own funding slashed in 2015 Ausdance was one of the companies to lose out – its grant was abolished, halving its operational budget.
Ausdance said that, “a review of the organisation’s priorities,” led to the cancellation. The awards, it added, may come back in a different form.
“While we understand the dance sector will be disappointed with the cancellation of the 2019 Australian Dance Awards, we are excited to continue our partnership with Tracks Dance Company to present the National Dance Forum in Darwin, 9-10 August 2019,” said Ausdance National president Gene Moyle. “We hope the sector will come out in force for these important discussions.”
